stage Dear God,I’m 34 and I’m just wondering when The Real Thing starts. You see, I have spent my whole life practicing and preparing for The Real Thing and I’ve put off contentment and doing what I truly want, until that moment presents itself. I studied double maths , so I could get a law degree, so I could get a good corporate job, so I could… I have ignored my mounting anxiety problems, because I was going to leave that until I’d arrived at The Real Thing. My last boyfriend left me because I couldn’t love the one I was with. How do I know when the dress rehearsal has ended and my time on stage has begun?Lucy, Barcelona/Spain

  1. Benjamin Says:

Life has already started, the world is your stage. Their is no waiting, their is no wishing, their so no hoping.
Your curtain call was your birth. We are only hear once. Your life is not over. 34 is just the interlude.
Make the most of it. Take changes. Do whats in your heart. So for your encore you may FINISH STRONG!

  2. janet Says:

I feel the same way…I can’t give you any answers, but I know that it is about acceptance.
Accept the things you love about yourself and your life, and change the things that you don’t.
Know that tomorrow is a new day, but a whole LOT can change today.
Be brave and make the changes. Cos at least change will force a direction. And lets face it a direction is far better than standing still.
    It’s your life.

  3. Lorry Says:

Your life starts just when you want it to. Get you life now! Do not meet the stupid expectations of others. Meet your secret dreams.Listen to your heart. Enjoy every single second in your life because this is the THING. Just be yoursef and express yourself. Feel the everlasting LOVE for everything. Universal LOVE is the THING! Get it, live it!

  4. atheist Says:

    Stop waiting and start waiting…

Open up to opportunities, be it lovewise, workwise, lifewise or otherwise…

Some guy once said “If the only aim of a captain were to preserve his ship, he would keep it in port forever”.

Don’t be that captain, go out and live your life in the way you seem fit. As long as you’re true to what you think is right there’s bound to be someone who will love you for being the way you are.

  5. jon Says:

    lucy,
there are no dress rehearsals in life. even though you might have missed out on some things, the good news is that it’s not over! there’s still life to be lived. also, remember that you are not what you produce (ie. degrees, careers, etc). you are uniquely you. so get out there and live life, don’t wait any longer!
    peace.
    jon

  6. Irene Says:

Let me answer you with some lyrics of Buz Luhrman (filmmaking guy moulin rouge etc):
“The most interesting people I know didn´t know what to do with their lives until in their fourties.”

  7. lots Says:

Hey Lucy, boy, do I hear you sister! I’m constantly waiting for tomorrow that never comes as life slips away. My only summation paraphrased from “Zen and the Art of Motorcylcle Maintainence” is that maybe there’s no destination, just a series of cow trails to navigate on a daily basis. I really like Jon’s Baz Luhrman quote, but clinging onto that notion would simply mean sustaining the dress rehersal for yet another decade in the hopes you get struck by lightening or something equally dramatic and epiphany-inducing. Don’t know how likely that is anymore. suspect life will just go on as it is, thus best to surround yourself with quality people and experiences and stop and pick daisies every now and then rather than waiting for the extraordinary. After all, as Ferris Buelller said, “Life goes by pretty fast. If you don’t stop and look around once in a while, you could miss it.” Big love, Lots xx

  8. a person Says:

I think you’re starting to realize it–It’s all the real thing.

  9. Ted Says:

John Lennon said “Life is what happens while we’re making other plans” Another inspiring quote was from these 5 Philosophers at the end of the 60’s who said “you can’t always get what you want, but if you try sometimes, you get what you need” !
Janet is right, Life and especially love is about acceptance. To love someone or yourself is to accept them for everything that they are and are not. Nothings Perfect, this world is full of wondrous variety.
I wish you all the best in your journey through life, enjoy the path without putting so much emphasis on the destination.
    Love Ted x
